Executive Director, Philadelphia Children's Commission

Gun violence is the typhoid or polio of our times. It is a public health crisis and our goal should be to eradicate it. We need to use every tool at our disposal from education, to inoculation, intervention and treatment. We need to get at the root of the issues that lead to the use of guns, but we also need to reduce or eliminate access to guns. When we face a health crisis, it is not enough to educate our children about how not to get sick we also do everything in our power to eliminate their exposure to viruses and other diseases. We need to take the same approach to gun violence if we want a city where all the children are well.

As a parent, I know that I need to be the first line of defense for my children protecting them from the harmful elements in the world. As a citizen, I know that I need to be the first line of defense for all of our communities' children.

I want to give them the opportunity to fulfill their highest hopes and greatest dreams, and not succumb to our worst nightmares.
